Forming an uneasy alliance based on necessity, the two head to the fort, intending to go their separate ways again as soon as possible. Christina plans to claim and run the ranch her uncle left her, Matt to build his own ranch in the Northwest. But fate steers a different course for them both, and soon Matt finds himself employed as a foreman for the cantankerous Miss Murie, defending her reputation, her property and her life, while, building the Murie Ranch herd. And in between Matt must save hapless victims from grotesque and gruesome torture and death inflicted by passing war parties; foil the plans of greedy, plotting gamblers and gunfighters and avoid the prosecution by one very unethical would-be lawman--all to save the woman he loves and build a home in the volatile, yet breathtaking Texas frontier.
